Your Taste Buds vs Your Brain - Sugar Wars

Sugar is more readily available in our diet than ever before and our sweet-tooth nation has rapidly developed sugar-related health problems, including diabetes and obesity.

Now you don’t usually overeat on salmon and broccoli, but many of us find it hard to say no to another piece of candy or cake. That’s normal. Sugary foods “light up the pleasure centers in our brains".

The good news is, you can retrain your taste buds to enjoy a diet with less sugar. When looking for sugar in an ingredient list, watch for words ending in “ose” (like dextrose and fructose) as well as cane sugar, syrup, molasses, and evaporated juice. Honey and agave are all sugar, too, and although they’re less processed, they still affect our bodies in similar ways. Also know that certain “warm spices,” like nutmeg, ginger, vanilla, cinnamon, and clove also do a great job of bringing out the natural sugary flavor of foods.
