Managing Weight: Skipping Breakfast vs Late-Night Snacking

Your daily biological clock and sleep regulate how the food you eat is metabolized; thus the choice of burning fats or carbohydrates changes depending on the time of day or night. Your body's circadian rhythm (internal clock) has programmed your body to burn fat when you sleep, so when you skip breakfast and then snack at night you delay burning the fat.

For many people, breakfast may be beneficial in the following ways for their weight management goals:

Reduced Hunger

Eating breakfast may reduce your hunger later in the day, which may make it easier to avoid overeating. When you skip breakfast, you may feel ravenous later and be tempted to reach for a quick fix — such as vending machine candy or doughnuts. In addition, eating breakfast may reduce cravings, especially for sweets and fats.

Healthy Choices

Eating breakfast may get you on track to make healthy choices all day. People who eat breakfast tend to be more mindful of their diets.

More Energy

A healthy breakfast refuels your body and replenishes the glycogen stores that supply your muscles with immediate energy. Routinely skipping breakfast is associated with decreased physical activity.
